Frequently Asked Questions

How tall can I mount the luminaires?

The best height for mounted lights depends on your lighting goals, the area to be illuminated and the luminaire being used. FLT can help you determine the optimum pole or mounting height for your project. Typical pole mounting heights are: 12-16 feet for pedestrian scale applications such as multi-use pathways 18-25 feet for parking lot and area lighting applications Up to 30 feet for local and collector streets Contact our lighting team at 1 844 279-8754 or email us for a free design consultation for your project.

What is the typical spacing for your lights?

This varies by project. Generally, we recommend spacing luminaries at a distance approximately 5 to 6 times the mounting height. For example, luminaires mounted on a 16 foot pole would be spaced 80 to 96 feet apart.

Do you provide IES files?

Yes, you can find the IES files in the Supporting Resources section the the product pages. Click the links below to find the IES files and other information on each of our products. BFL, Vega, IPL, PLB, PLB-AC, RSL-Side Mount, RSL-Pole Top, SCL, SCL2, and WLB.

Can you help us determine which solar lights will work best for our installation?

Absolutely. Our team is genuinely passionate about solar lighting and eager to learn about your project to help you find the right solution for your specific site and application. Call us at 1 844 279-8754 or email us to get started.

What distribution should I choose?

View our in depth blog post on lighting distributions here. Our lights have 4 common distribution options. Type II and III distributions are ideal for applications like multi-use pathways, sidewalks, local streets and collector streets. Type IV and V distributions are commonly used in wider area applications like parking lots, plazas or parks. The best distribution depends on your lighting goals and the specifics of your project. Call our lighting experts at 1 844 279-8754 or email us to discuss what would work best.

Do I need an electrician to install FLT’s lights?

No. Our lights have been designed to installed by general contractors or laborers. However, we recommend consulting your local authorities to determine any legal qualifications for installation in your jurisdiction.

How long does it take to install your lights?

All FLT products are designed to be as simple to install as possible. We find that it typically takes under 5 minutes to install our solar bollards, under 10 minutes for our solar luminaires and less than 30 minutes for our BFL solar street light.

Are your solar lights a challenge to install?

Not at all. FLT designs every light with simplicity in mind, no trenching, no cabling and no connection to the electrical grid required. Most installations take under 15 minutes, with some as quick as 10. FLT's Adaptive Intelligence Controller means select lights are ready to turn on straight out of the box, with no complicated on-site assembly or specialized skills needed.

Do footing requirements vary for your solar luminaire poles?

Yes. Footing specifications for solar luminaire poles vary depending on regional building codes, local soil conditions, and structural load requirements. For accurate, site-specific specifications we recommend engaging a structural engineer early in your project planning process. Based on past installations, footings have typically ranged from 8"–10" in diameter and 18"–24" in depth, though these should be treated as a general reference only and not a substitute for a site-specific engineering assessment.

Do footing requirements vary for your solar bollards?

Yes. Footing requirements can vary greatly depending on your region and site conditions, so we recommend having a structural engineer specify the design for your project. Our bollards are typically mounted on concrete footings as a general baseline.

How long will your fixtures last?

Our fixtures’ estimated useful life is 20+ years.

How long will the light’s battery last?

Our high-performance lithium batteries have a typical useful lifespan of 10+ years. Learn more about The Difference Between Solar Battery Types.

Can you customize the on/off and dimming schedules for your solar lights?

Yes. Our commercial solar lights support 11 standard lighting profiles as well as fully customizable time-based profiles, giving you precise control over when lights turn on, dim, or switch off. Each unit is pre-programmed at the factory to your exact project specification, simplifying installation on-site with no additional setup required. Profiles can be adjusted at any time to suit changing operational requirements.

When do your lights turn on/off?

You can choose from 11 standard lighting profiles or a time-based custom profile so that the lights are on, off, or dimmed at exactly the times that are right for your project. Lighting profiles are pre-programmed at the factory to your specification to simplify and speed installation and commissioning. Of course, they can be changed in the future if necessary.

The sunlight at my site is highly variable, how do I know if your solar lights will operate effectively?

Our lights work best with 2–3 hours of direct sunlight. FLT’s Adaptive Intelligence enables the lights to predicatively adapt to their surroundings, providing a level of lighting performance and reliability unmatched in other solar products. If you’re unsure about the light levels at your location, please give us a call and we can work through the analysis with you.

How long will the lights function without sun?

Our adaptive capabilities ensure that our lights can function through extremely adverse conditions of up to 14 days without any effective charging. This compares to 3 to 5 days for most other options which may or may not be sufficient.

I need something extremely rugged. Are your solar lights vandal resistant and built to withstand high-impact scenarios?

Yes. Our solar lights go through a thorough mechanical testing program covering hurricane-zone wind loads, snow loads and structural load testing. Built with robust materials, AAMA 2604 powder coat finishes for corrosion resistance, and IP67 water ingress protection, they are well suited for public spaces, car parks, construction sites and other high-risk outdoor environments. While no fixture is indestructible, our lights are engineered to be among the most durable and vandal resistant solar lights available.
